Generally, sports injuries are caused as a result of direct trauma that is too severe for the body to tolerate. Direct trauma often causes damage and injuries to the body. Injuries that swell, cause pain, impair movement, etc., are all acute injuries. Acute injuries generally include but are not limited to:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Knee injuries
  • Rotator cuff tears in the shoulder
  • Acute back or neck strains
  • Hamstring strains
  • Groin strains
  • Calf strains

The overuse of tissues generally causes chronic injuries as a result of excess loading of structures on the muscle tissues. When this occurs, the tissues break down and cause pain, aggravation and a worsened injury. Poor movement patters, muscle imbalances, improper technique, excessive training, muscle weakness/tightness are all contributing factors for chronic injuries. Others can include:

  • Tennis elbow (Lateral elbow pain / Epicondylitis)
  • Shoulder Bursitis (Subacromial Bursitis)
  • Patellar tendinopathy
  • Stress fractures in the shins
  • Hip pain
  • Osteitis pubis
